Theories

I've developed some new theories about my unemployment. I've never had a hard time getting a job that I wanted (up until now), so going on four months of unemployment has been a new and humbling experience for me. Here are my theories about why it's lasted so long.

1. The economy (obviously) - this is a big one... I apply for positions and they get cancelled, new jobs aren't posted, etc.

2. I am a young-ish, married BYU graduate living in Utah. This is my most recent idea about why I've been unable to get a job. I had my thoughts about it while I was still at BYU and interviewed with a few companies in Utah (not sure if you remember), but the ring on the finger is like the nail in the coffin. Since I've been unemployed, I've submitted applications for 36 positions, interviewed for more than 10 of those, and had second (or third) interviews for several. This destroys my theory about being a bad interviewer, because if I were really awful, I don't think they'd be calling me back. So, my strongest theory at this point is that I can't get hired because I'm a girl, I'm married (one step closer to baby) and they think I'm going to get pregnant any day now which means I'll last 9 months to a year at most, when they'll have to go through the hiring process all over again. It's times like this I wish I had gone into nursing or teaching - two fantastic, respectable professions that seem a little less subjected to this sexist rule.

3. God is trying to teach me a very important lesson that I haven't learned yet and will only see the meaning of in years to come.

4. I needed the time to get my own business rolling.

5. I'm supposed to be working on family history, volunteering, humanitarian aid projects, and serving the elderly in my now abundant free time. (this goes along with the lessons God is trying to teach me)

6. I'm supposed to have a baby. Now. (not sold on this one, just a theory)

I Finally Did It!

So, I've been talking for a year now about running a half marathon. Last week, I finally registered for one. It's the Canyonlands Half Marathon in Moab in March. It's happening a little early this year (beginning of March instead of the end) so hopefully it won't be too cold. The race winds along the Colorado River and is mostly downhill. I'm super excited to start training more seriously and actually have a goal with some sort of sacrifice as motivation (the $50 non-refundable registration fee). :) The lottery for the race happens in two weeks, so wish me luck on getting chosen.

Is there anybody out there?

So, the blog is dead. I mean, really. But I'm going to puff one more breath into its lungs with hope of reviving it for good. I think now is the most logical time to keep it going anyway, since we're all sprawled all over the place. So much is happening - Whitney in DC, Jenny starting a new school year, Joanna figuring out what's next! I mean, really... it's probably one of the more interesting times we could be keeping track of each other. :)

September is going well so far. It's one of my favorite months. Or it has the potential to be. The weather slowly cools into crisp autumn days and evening comes ever-so-earlier luring us slowly inside for movie/tv/comfort food/cuddling goodness. I love fall.

On Labor Day Spencer and I rode our bikes up Emigration Canyon to Ruth's Diner for breakfast. Ruth's is one of Salt Lake's finest comfort food establishments. We've been three times now and we always sit at the same table on the patio with the trees and the lights and the musicians playing. It's a great little place. If ever there is another 4WM rendez-vous, we should put Ruth's on our list for sure!

Last week I went camping, in two weeks I'm going to San Francisco, and for now, I'm just waiting to hear what's happening with all of you.

cool things utah part I

I'm developing a new feature on the blog. We're calling it "Cool Things Utah" to help celebrate and enjoy our Utah lives and live them to their fullest. Mostly it's to just help me feel good about the fact that I chose to live here.

The first entry is inspired by my New York roommate Megan. She suggests Tower Theatre as a great place to catch flicks you can't see anywhere else. The inside of the theatre is supposed to be amazing.

Always One Foot On the Ground

It's so odd, but I'm staying in Utah.

I really can't believe it when I think about the fact that I turned down my dream job. It just doesn't make any sense. But I feel right about being here for now and I feel confident that other opportunities in the Northwest will open up for me when the timing is right for me to be there.

So the good news is that we're all in Utah right now! I think we need a 4WM weekend... before our concert in March.
